Wallpaper Tips & Tricks For Beginners Part 1

When redesigning a room, it can get a little complicated as you try to figure out what will work best for that room. One of the major aspects of interior design is the wall of a room. As it is one of the first things people notice when entering the room. The walls set the mood and tone for the room depending on the color, if painted, or design if wallpaper is applied. For beginners, entering the world of wallpaper and interior design can be quite stressful. The following tips will help any beginner as they go through the process of picking and assembling wallpaper to their rooms.

When it comes to wallpaper, you want to make sure you order all the wallpaper you expect to use and need. That way when the time comes you have all the materials you need. In addition, there is no need to order more which could cause different shades or colors if the store runs out. When your shipment comes in, make sure to check the lot numbers so you know all the wallpaper came from the same run. If you have wallpaper from different runs, they might look different as different runs have slightly different colors and don’t always match.

Lining Paper

Lining paper is great for first time wallpaper installers. This should be placed on the wall before hanging the wallpaper. Lining paper will prevent the wallpaper from creasing or stretch as you assemble. As well, it helps the paste, used to stick the wallpaper to the wall, dry faster.

Hide Alignment Mistakes

Much like with anything in life, hanging up wallpaper can come with some struggles. One of the biggest and most common issues with wallpaper is misalignment. If you are applying new wallpaper over an older sheet of wallpaper or a dark colored wall, apply a one inch stripe of white paint along the top of the wall. This will make it not as noticeable if the wall paper does not appear to align at the top of the wall.

Gather Your Tools

With any home improvement project, making sure you have the right tools accessible to you is majorly important. For putting up wallpaper you will need the following:

  • Seam roller
  • Wallpaper smoother or brush
  • Carpenter’s level
  • Push pins
  • Tape measure (steel)
  • Tray full of warm water
  • Wet sponge
  • A bucket of water
  • Putty knife
  • Utility knife

Plastic Over Newspaper

Putting up wallpaper can get messy, and we always want to protect our furniture, floor and the wallpaper itself. Although newspaper is usually the go to in these instances, we advise you not to do so. This is because if the newspaper gets wet, and it will, the wet ink can seep through the newspaper and stain your new wallpaper making it useless. To avoid this from happening we suggest using a plastic table or drop cloth.
