How to Choose the Right Wallpaper for Your Space

man putting up wallpaperWallpaper is one of the easiest and most on trend ways to transform your space nowadays. Whether it is a statement wall, or an entire room, wallpaper provides you with many choices, textures and patterns.

Once you have decided that you want to wallpaper a room, how do you choose what is best for you?

First, get a few samples! Put the sample in the room you will be wallpapering, step back and view it as an entire room and live with it for a few days before making a final decision.

If the room is small, use a pattern with a lot of detail, to the make the space pop. If the room is larger, go for something crazy. Be a maximalist. Decide if you would like a statement wall, or if you would like something that supports your furniture. Choose a room that you don’t spend much time in for a louder print, this way you can avoid pattern fatigue. In either option, aim for a contrast between the wallpaper and furniture. This is what keeps the style of your space looking fresh.

Patterned wallpapers help to create depth, detail and textures. Florals are also an option because they contain much more detail than just color. These are a good option if you want the walls to create most of the design in your space. Another option is a stamped metallic print. These tend to be more affordable than handpainted metallic paper. Metallics work well with different types of lighting; in the daytime they reflect natural light and at night they become more interesting and moody.

Yet another option is geometric. Geometrics are a statement, and usually complement the retro or modern styles. Smaller geometric pieces are the easiest to hang, considering you will be cutting less paper at a time. If you aren’t crazy about the entire space having this print, consider adding it as an accent to a room. The energy of the print will bring your space to life.

Second, consider your lighting. View the space in day and night time light. If you are feeling hesitant about choosing a big, bold pattern, neutrals are always classic. You can choose a muted pattern, or calming print to embrace your white canvas.

Third, always choose a wallpaper with a higher quality finish and a softer tone of ink. Less expensive wallpapers with a shiny finish can look overpowering, and this is not ideal for your space.

Fourth, have fun with it! Pick a print that you love, and you won’t be disappointed! Be sure to consider all of your material options.
