10 Key Interior Design Rules

Interior design is a tricky thing to get down as the industry is ever changing as well as new trends coming and going left and right. On top of these trends there are generic rules that are to be considered when starting a new interior design project. Not only will these rules, from measuring your space to avoiding clutter, help you get started they also will stand the test of all the trends that are sure to happen over the years.

  1. Measure Your Space – This first rule is a golden room for not just interior design but just furniture purchasing and placement in general. Before you buy anything, be sure to take measurements of your space. This will avoid any chance of buying a sofa that is too large or small. You also do not want to buy to many belongings that there is not walking space throughout your room. To avoid this, take circulation measurements to ensure you have ample walking space between pieces of furniture.
  2. Simplicity – We know you are excited to add character to your home but always remember to start simple. Get to know your home and come up with an outline that will be tasteful but not be overbearing. A simple floor plan and central pieces are great starting points on your interior design journey. You can always add more after you have mastered a basic outline of your home.
  3. Form & Function – Great interior designers know that the best pieces to have in a home are multi-purpose pieces. As they will bring both style and functionality to your home, while showing your creative side. Think of the last time you were blown away by your friends stylish furniture piece that had a functional aspect to it.
  4. Quality Furniture – As with the old adage says, quality over quantity, it is true for interior design pieces. While shopping on a budget is always something to consider, it may not be the best long-term decision. A cheap frame or furniture piece will fall apart in no time compared to a higher quality piece that you know will stand the test of time. Rooms that have cheap pieces will also give off a cheap feel as guests will notice the short comings of these cheaper priced items.
  5. Mix & Match – A great way to add layers to your interior design plan that will excite guests is adding different textures. There are tons of different style of textures from leather to rattan, the list is endless. Pairing different materials together is a great way to add contrast while bringing the room together as a whole.
  6. Decorate Walls – We all agree, a plain old wallpaper is boring and bland. Spice things up and add your own personal style by implementing artwork, mirrors or a tapestry to liven up your space. Bolder is better!
  7. Symmetry – What makes interior design work it is if all the pieces of your puzzle come together and give off a pristine look of symmetry. Symmetry brings a sense of calmness and order to a room that is inviting. By establishing symmetry first you will then have the opportunity to see what changes you can make next that work well with the overall outline.
  8. Mix Styles – Just like with textures, mixing different interior design styles is a great way to spice up the look of your living space. Try reupholstering a traditional sofa with a modern fabric or color, or add rustic accents to your space. The combinations are endless and are a fun way to add change to your house.
  9. Layer Lighting – By layering the lighting in your room you can elevate your space’s ambiance. In addition to a room’s main light, add chic sconces or set up an overarching floor lamp at the top of your rug.
  10. Avoid Clutter – The main thing with interior design is to make sure your guests see the work you put into it. This means that you will need to avoid clutter at all costs. Not only will having a clean space show off your design but no one likes a messy home. Use shelves, bookcases, and decorative baskets as multi-purpose pieces to add to your layout while hiding the clutter.
